Seebergsee - a jewel in the Swiss Alps

Seebergsee, Schweiz, Switzerland

The Swiss Alps are undeniable beautiful, but there are places that are even more pittoresque than others. The Lake Seeberg is one of those, situated in between big mountains, it's shimmering in blue and green and attracts mountain experts just as hiking newbies.

The tour below is suitable for a little more experienced hikers with a good fitness level, as the first ascent is pretty hard. But trust me: the lake is worth it, for sure!

Dogs are allowed on this trail but have to be kept on a lead in the grazing land. The hike doesn't require any special abilities, neither for humans nor for dogs.

Requirements & Gear

hiking and trail running shoes, dog

For this hike, I recommend light hiking boots or solid running shoes, as I wear them on the picture. We had pretty perfect  autumnal conditions, but in case it's a bit humid, I'd definitely recommend hiking poles because the alpine meadows can be slippery.

There are two huts close to the lake, but I guess a picnic is the better option, as you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake or take a break on the panoramic ridge of Vordermenigen .

Of course, don't forget your first-aid kit and your camera!

Detailed Description

Start your hike from the paid parking at Meniggrund. Follow the asphalt trail (yellow signs) uphill slightly to the left. In a wide curve you'll come across the first meadow. After a few metres the asphalt trail converts to a small path across the meadows leading into a little hollow and the further uphill to the first cabin on your left.

From the "Sennhütte" follow the asphalt street for a couple of minutes before turning slightly to your right into the first steep ascent. The trail is now a forestry road leading through a mixture of open grass land and light forests. Afterwards the trail follows the panoramic ridge of Meniggrat and Vordermenigen and will bring you towards a short downhill section before crossing the next to huts on your right hand side. After a couple more minutes following the yellow signs you'll reach the beautiful Seebergsee in a basin surrounded by pittoresque mountains.

To get back to the parking don't take the same route but follow the path on the left side of the cabins (cabins to lake and back, 15 minutes each). YOu'll soon arrive at more meadows which you need to cross before ending up on a (sometimes freuqently used) asphalt street. Follow this street towards a big picnic area (covered seating)and then head towards the forestry road.. AFter about 4-5 hours total hiking time, you'll arrive back at the parking lot of Meniggrund.
